Vice Admiral Bharatan served as the chief of personnel as well as the vice chief of naval staff of India. He is a graduate of the defense services staff college, India as well as naval war college Rhode island, New England, USA. He is B. Sc (Physics) and M.Sc. (Defense studies). He has also served as India's naval attache in Washington DC. The government of India gave him the Vishist Seva Medal, Athivishist Seva Medal and the Param Vishist Seva Medal. Some of the positions he held include: command of an anti-sub helicopter squadron, a patrol frigate, guided missile destroyer, flag officer sea training, flag officer naval aviation and flag officer commanding eastern fleet.
